Despite the reverses of the current economy, most of us know little to nothing about how it feels to be wealthy or how it feels to be poor. Although we seldom speculate about being wealthy, for more than a year many have thought about the possibility of being poor. All of us have differing opinions about what that would mean.

For some, poverty is not buying a new car this year. Then there are those for whom the ultimate sacrifice is a latte-less Monday morning. For others, the loss of a job means nothing — they haven’t had employment for longer than they can remember. A falling stock market matters not for those who have never had investments and foreclosure is no threat if you are living on the street. Once I thought that the difference between indigence and poverty was defined by whether or not a person could still help others. That was a comforting thought. I have since learned that poverty is as much concerned about fear for the future as it is about present need. Read the rest of the article here
