In 1883,
when the parish outgrew the original temporary chapel,
the building was remodeled
into a two room school house, and thus
began the story of Visitation
School. The first teacher was Mary
DeWire, who stayed until 1887,
when Dominican Sisters from Mission
San Jose, California
arrived. In a short time they were recalled to
the Motherhouse. In
January of 1891, they were replaced by 3
sisters of the newly formed
Sisters of Saint Mary's of Oregon.
Varying numbers of sisters of
this order, assisted by lay teachers,
have served Visitation School
to this day. Several school buildings
have come and gone over the
years. From 1921 to 1957 Verboort even
had a high school.
School District 97, and Verboort High School were
dissolved in 1957, the
students being dispersed among neighboring
districts. Visitation School
is currently housed in the building that was
built in 1938 as Verboort High
School, with the addition of 5 modular
classrooms to help accommodate
the 150+, grade K-8 students.
